MS69 or MS70?
Taking a hint from some of the old codgers here Iam going to get some proof coins, SAE and GAE. My question is there is quite a price difference between the two grades and are the price differences justified? Please help before I pull the trigger! I realize that not all coins are created equal, but I want the best bang for my buck. TIA.

Re: MS69 or MS70?
IMO. Buy only PCGS graded. For bullion related,I'd consider both. Check ebay ended listings and research prices, for 69/70. If you can snipe/get below market a 70 or 69 grab it. Consider buying from mint or raw(unslabbed) and submit for grading yourself. Think about resale, always. Off an on-line venue or major auction house, few will be interested in the 70"s but compared to 69 they are few,so demand/price is high.....Again,research current market, buy what looks below.

Now I do have PF70s 2000 to 2008 SAE = for fun. But, the darn price is best spent on having more not the best - unless you are FILTHY "RICHY RICH," of course. :ok: If NGC are cheaper - use your head. In MS & PF 70s I use PCGS in lousy spousy First Strikes... just six to date... yo, Rocky, ya got rocks for brains... the biggest NEWBE tip of the MONTH: "Remember POPULATIONS of certified TOP coins never go DOWN" - sad thing is LIKE when they found the US Central America they added almost 6,000 1857 - S Double Eagles to the POPULATION - where they was once one or two MS they now have over 5,000. "Remember many Saints were really rare in the 1960s now they AIN'T!" I can see it someday when the well-wanted-coveted- and wished for modern 2008 Buffalos come out in mass from a secret source... |
Re: MS69 or MS70?
PGS...Before 2007, MS 70 ment you had a rare coin....
2007 and After....check the populations, but I don't see where there is any difference between PGS and NGC from that point forward. I stopped collecting anything slabed after 2007.... If the date is prior to 2007 and it is an MS69 you have a chance, small but a chance, that it may be re-submitted to see if it could be an MS70 coin today. Obviously, when they changed their grading policies in 2007, they changed the game. They couldn't stand that NGC had been putting out MS70 like candy for years and collecting big bucks for them...so PCGS dropped their standards and POW...hundreds of ms70 coins hit the market... The only thing that could explain the difference is lower standards...and I think they may have gotten past the "milkspot" issue but that is another story. If the coins are 2007 prior....look hard for milkspots. Try to find coins with none showing...and they will, even on the ms69.... but ms or mint state are not the shinny proof coins. They have different letters before the grade like DPC - Deep Proof Cameo...not the ms designation. Those are business strikes and some burnished issues. Not the same as proofs. |
Re: MS69 or MS70?
The difference between a PF/MS 69 and a PF/MS70 is the grader is having a bad day or having an awesome day, respectively.
There is no scientific difference. Buying a 70 is only for those with money to burn. |
